An audit/examination by the IRS is a review of a taxpayer’s documentation supporting the income and expenses the taxpayer reported on his tax returns or which the taxpayer failed to report. Most taxpayers are uncomfortable with an examination of their tax returns because they are not confident that the income and deductions claimed were properly reported or correctly supported by their documentation.
The IRS will select returns for audit/examination on a random basis or because of a “red flag” on a tax return. An audit/examination usually occurs at the local IRS office or at the taxpayer’s home at which time the IRS compliance officer will require the taxpayer to support the return.
If you have been notified that the IRS will audit your tax return, we can assist you with the audit process. Specifically, we will review your returns and the documentation supporting the return to insure that your records are prepared for the audit.
Once we have insured that your returns and documentation are in order, we will review the audit process and answer any questions that you have about IRS audits. When the audit occurs we will attend the audit with you (or for you) and represent your position before the IRS.
If the IRS determines that you have a tax liability after the audit, we can assist you in negotiation with the IRS if you need assistance paying the liability. Several types of resolution are possible including installment plans and offers in compromise.
